Shot Put Progression

Shot Placement

1.  Throwing Hand:  "Clean Palms dirty fingers".  Rest the shot in the curve of four fingers and use your thumb as support.

2.  Neck:  Place shot against your neck in-between the front of your neck and the side right below your ear.

***When holding the shot properly it should be against your neck with your thumb pointing down and your elbow as high as you can lift it.

Release

Step 1

1.  Place feet shoulder width apart.  Toes against board or even with one another.

2.  Release shot from proper placement @ a release point of 45 degrees.

3.  Your elbow should be up.

4.  Your thumb should be pointing down.

5.  about 50% strength.

*  goal is to make sure shot placement and release are correct.

* no emphasis on distance.

Step 2 (Power Position)

Right Handed Thrower

1.  Left foot placement on the left hand side of the toe board.  Right foot shoulder width apart toe to heel relationship.  Right foot in front of your left foot.

2.  Using proper shot placement twist body around so your shoulders are parellell with the toe board looking directly behind the throwing sector.  **  Shoulders being parellell with the toe board is important.

3.  Left leg should be fairly straight and your weight should be over your right flexed leg.
